A 2nd half penalty kick proved to be the difference as #3 ranked Akron defeated SMU 1-0 in the Radisson Tulsa Airport Classic in Oklahoma. It was the season opener for both teams. It was a tight defensive struggle all night as SMU and Akron showed top flight defenses with Akron creating the only two major first half chances hitting the post twice. Blair Gavin tallied the penalty kick winner for Akron.
"Akron is a good team that can expose weaknesses in your team," said SMU head coach Tim McClements. "We performed well, especially as the game went on. Even though we lost, we still can take some positives from the game."
Next up for SMU is a Sunday afternoon game with Seattle who held homeside Tulsa to a 1-1 draw in the late game Friday evening.
