Two Mustang soccer student-athletes have been included on the Missouri Athletic Club's Hermann Trophy watch lists, as released by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) on Wednesday. They are junior midfielder Bruno Guarda (Piricicaba, Brazil) on the 29-member men's list and junior goalkeeper Ashley Gunter (Lancaster, Pa.) on the 45-member women's list.
A 2006 NSCAA All-America third-team pick, Guarda is the reigning Conference USA Player of the Year. Over the summer, he was selected to the PDL All-League team as well as the PDL Southern All-Conference team, scoring seven goals and three assists with the DFW Tornados. Guarda was a MAC Hermann Trophy semifinalist in 2006.
Gunter earned second team NSCAA All-America honors in 2006 and was named the 2006 Conference USA Defensive Player of the Year. An NSCAA All-Central Region first team pick, she saw action in all 23 games last season, posting a 17-5-1 record with 11 shutouts.
Players are selected to the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List by a committee of Division I coaches who are NSCAA members. In November, the list will be narrowed to 15 semifinalists. Three finalists will be named in early December in conjunction with the NCAA Division I College Cup and will be invited to the Missouri Athletic Club on Friday, January 11, 2008. The winner of the 2007 award will be announced during a nationally-televised news conference that evening.
