SMU men blast Central Arkansas

Published 11/10/2007 10:42:01 AM by staff from smusoccer

The SMU men's soccer team got three unassisted goals, and goalkeepers Steve Sandbo and Craig Hill were barely tested as the Mustangs cruised to a 3-0 win Friday night over visiting Central Arkansas at Westcott Field. The Mustangs, ranked #6 in the current Soccermogul.com national ranking, dominated the Bears from start to finish, collecting six corner kicks to UCA's two, and outshooting the Bears, 20-2.

Junior midfielder Jeff Harwell got the only goal the Mustangs would need when he sent a free kick in from the left side that deflected off a UCA defender and into the net in the 24th minute for his second goal of the season.  The Ponies maintained that lead until the 37th minute, when freshman midfielder Kekoa Osorio swiped a UCA pass, spun and blasted a shot into the lower left corner of the net from 25 yards out, giving SMU a 2-0 halftime lead.

The Mustangs cruised from that point, resting several starters for much or all of the second half. Before exiting the game, senior defender Adrian Chevannes - a former forward - scored the goal of the night, dribbling down the right sideline to the corner flag, turning the corner on a UCA defender and cutting back to the middle of the field, where he fired a shot into the lower left corner of the goal.

The Mustangs finish the regular season with a record of 13-3-2 overall, and 6-1-1 in Conference USA games. UCA finished with a record of 6-8-0. SMU finished second in Conference USA to Tulsa in the regular season after the Golden Hurricane beat UAB, 2-0, Friday night. The Conference USA tournament will be held this week, Nov. 14-18, in Birmingham, Ala.
