SMU Womens soccer spring update

Published 3/25/2008 12:21:24 PM by staff from dallas

Here's a brief update on happenings within the SMU women's soccer program this spring under 2nd year coach Brent Irwin.  SMU announced their player signings for the upcoming fall and have a solid 0-0 draw with Baylor in their first spring game.  Saturday April 5th they will face Notre Dame at Pizza Hut Park at 7:00.

Goalkeeper
Ashley Gunter turned in a sterling performance, turning aside several shots on goal while playing behind a revamped defense, to lead the SMU women's soccer team to a 0-0 tie against visiting Baylor Saturday at Westcott Field. Gunter, the 2006 second-team All-America honoree who will be a senior in the fall, had two familiar faces - all-conference defender Carley Phillips and returning starter Katie Leonard - in front of her, but the unit also included Kim Peabody, a converted forward who moved back to a defensive midfield spot at the very end of the 2007 season, and former midfielder Kristin Medeiros. In their first game playing together, the quartet played well together, and impressed head coach Brent Erwin.  "Ashley (Gunter) was very impressive - she had a great game," Erwin said. "What made it even better was the fact that she was playing behind a new-look defense. Carley has always been solid back there, and Katie Leonard has become one of our best players. But Kim Peabody and Kristin Medeiros did a really nice job stepping in. They didn't look like it was their first time playing together as a group."  The SMU offense, meanwhile, met an equally stingy Baylor defense, getting scoring chances from Caitlin Carter and Krystal Bailey, who was granted an extra year of eligibility after missing much of last season with a shoulder injury.
