SMU women fall to Oklahoma State in season opener

Published 8/24/2008 9:08:09 AM by staff from dallas
The SMU women's soccer team outshot nationally ranked Oklahoma State in the second half, 5-4, but fell short in the season opener for each team, 3-0 at Westcott Field.  The Cowgirls, ranked No. 23 in the nation in the season's first National Soccer Coaches Association of America poll, got the only goal they'd need in the 14th minute, when Kyndall Treadwell converted a pass from Allyson Leggett, and took a 2-0 lead into halftime when Katie Richardson scored in the 35th minute.

But after getting outshot, 11-1, in the first half, the Mustangs came out rejuvenated after the intermission. Head coach Brent Erwin got a more energized performance from his team in the second half, as the Ponies outshot their guests, 5-4, after the intermission.

The Mustangs, who played six freshmen in the game, gave Erwin plenty of reason for encouragement, he said after the game.   "I feel good about the way we played. We're so young," Erwin said of his squad, which includes 17 freshman and six sophomores. "We're going to use these games as learning opportunities, but we have quality players here - we're going to be better. We're going to be fine."

Senior goalkeeper Ashley Gunter made seven saves, including one early on when she foiled a point-blank shot by OSU's All-America candidate, Yolanda Odenyo. Senior defender Carley Phillips and freshman forward Logan May had two shots each for SMU.
