SMU completes perfect spring

Published 4/23/2008 12:01:39 PM by staff from smusoccer

The SMU men's soccer team completed its spring exhibition with a 1-0 victory over Midwestern State Friday night at Westcott Field as part of the team's coaching clinic.   Midfielder Bruno Guarda, a Hermann Trophy semifinalist last year who will be a senior this fall, scored the game's only goal when he converted a penalty kick nearly halfway through the first half. The penalty was called when a Midwestern player blocked a dangerous cross with his arm.  The goal was Guarda's second of the spring.

Goalkeepers Craig Hill and Jonathan Lester, who are battling to replace Steve Sandbo as the team's starting netminder, split time between the pipes again Friday and kept the scoreboard clean for the re-vamped SMU defense.  Combined with wins over the Kansas City Wizards and the FC Dallas reserves, as well as a scoreless tie in an earlier matchup against the FC Dallas reserves, Hill and Lester backstopped the SMU defense to a perfect, scoreless spring season.

SMU 0  FC Dallas 0
SMU 1  KC Wizards reserves 0
SMU 1  FC Dallas reserves 0
SMU 1  Midwestern State 0
