Three Locals Named to US Under 23s

A pair of FC Dallas players along with local product Lee Nguyen have been named to the US Under 23 roster for the upcoming Toulon International Tournament in France later this month. FC Dallas' Blake Wagner and Brek Shea were called to the US Under 23 Men's National Team by head coach Peter Nowak. Also joining the 22 players is Lee Nguyen a Dallas product who now plays in Holland. Wagner and Shea will depart Dallas on Wednesday, joining the team in Toulon on Thursday, May 15.
The Americans will have five days of training before their opening match against Turkey on May 21. The next two Group B matches are against the Ivory Coast on May 23, and Italy on May 25. All 16 games of the Toulon International Tournament will be broadcast on Fox Soccer Channel.
Group A of the tournament features France along with Chile, the Netherlands and Japan. The top two teams in each group will advance to the semifinals on May 27, and either the third place match or final on May 29.
Overall, the Americans have made seven previous trips to the invitation only Toulon International Tournament, with their most recent appearance dating back to 2001 when the team finished in fifth place. In 1989 the team finished in a best ever third place, and in 1994, 1997 and 2001 received the Fair Play Award.
The US squad will be participating in its 13th Olympic Games, placed into Group B, and will play Japan (August 7), the Netherlands (August 10) and Nigeria (August 13).
