Plano to state over Jesuit in shootout

The top ranked team in the nation has fallen. The undefeated Jesuit boys went down to Plano yesterday afternoon in Midland as they fell to Plano in a shootout after the two sides could not find the net through 80 minutes of regulation and two 10 minute overtime periods.
Plano senior Brett Hardy's shootout goal stood up as the decider in Plano's 1-0 win over Jesuit in the Class 5A Region I title match Saturday at Grande Communications Stadium. The win moves Plano (22-3-5) on for its eighth state tournament on Friday and Saturday in Georgetown. All five previous trips have netted state titles, the last in 2000.
Jesuit (21-1-2), ranked #1 nationally by ESPN, lost for the first time this season. The two District 8-5A foes fought back and forth for the 100 minutes of play, but neither could break through. After Brett Hardy's shootout goal Jesuit's chance to extend the shootout was lost when Reason Pumphrey's attempt was ruled to have come after the 5-second shot count had expired.
Plano coach Bob Weir said his team was fortunate three-fold: "We had one that hit the post and went in. They had one hit the post and miss. And, of course, the clock went out a hair before the last shot."
Alexei Reyes and Kyle Green had shootout goals for Jesuit. Danny Hahn and Tim Williams scored for Plano before Brett Hardy.
