North Texas teams dominate Region III Championships

Published 7/4/2007 3:13:54 PM by staff from dallas

North Texas teams dominated in poor conditions at the Region III Championships in Oklahoma City over the last week.  Rain and mud dictated play throughout as group matches were shortened, but teams fought through.  The most surprising early casualty was last year's national finalist Solar 89 boys who crashed out in the group stages unable to adapt to the terrible field conditions.  A couple of girls sides expected to dominate also fell short as Dallas Texans 89 lost in the quarters and Dallas Texans 88 lost in group stages.

Otherwise, North Texas boys teams and CASL of North Carlolina were the forces.  North Texas claimed boys titles at U17 with Andromeda and at U19 with defending national champions Dallas Texans, while CASL grabbed the U14 title and lost in the finals at U15 and U17.

U18 boys final -
After a scoreless regulation, Chandler Diggs of Texans scored early in the first overtime but Atlanta Fire found the equalizer after a Texan was sent off.  The Georgia side won in penalty kicks to claim the title.
U14 boys final -
CASL forged a 1st half 2-0 lead only to see Solar Red fight back to even the game at 2-2 in the 2nd half.  CASL regained composure and earned the title on a late goal from Davis Meyer.
U17 boys final -
Andromeda won a classic final over CASL on a Luke Joyner overtime goal.

On the girls side, North Texas sides won every age group except the U19s where CASL were crowned champions.  Dallas Texans claimed the U14, U15, U16 titles while Sting won at U14.  Ironically, the coach of the U15 & U16 Dallas Texan sides will be joining Sting next fall and taking the 2 teams along.  A Solar side that has exploded onto the scene this year won the U18 title Challenge 89 in the final.  CASL of North Carolina won the U19 final with a dominating 6-0 win Memphis. All told North Texas claimed 7 of the 12 places at nationals, while South Texas grabbed 2, CASL gaining 2 and 1 each from Georgia.
