The era of the megaclub seems to have arrived as a wave of mergers and acquisitions rocked North Texas over the last few weeks. With the arrival of the the US Soccer Development Academy league, some major clubs moved to expand as Solar SC took in Blackwatch and most recently DFW Tejanos. The Blackwatch group will be most closely associated with the Solar group while the DFW Tejanos coaches Willie Molano and Shane Barrow will align with the Solar Red group. The DFW Tejanos merger will put together the two big dogs west of Dallas into a single power. Meanwhile, River Plate and director Jose Maria Bazan merged with Andromeda to fom a very formidable force as River Plate has emerged over the last few years producing some quality sides. Andromeda has a couple of fabulous older sides, but are sorely lacking at the younger ages. The merger should produce talented teams all the way through the age groups. Finally, we musn't forget the Megaclub of them all Dallas Texans, who haven't been gobbling up clubs as they have in the past, but still sport the biggest and most accomplished club in North Texas.
The impact of the megaclubs cannot be ignored as a simple scan of the youngest two age groups in Dallas Classic clearly shows. At under 11, the top 7 teams in the standings all hail from the 4 megaclubs, as do 12 of the top 18. At under 12 all 10 squads in division 1 last year would be from the megaclubs. Is this good for the development of soccer in North Texas? Time will tell, but it is very evident that everywhere you look next year.....even more so than it is now.....you will see 4 major jerseys dominating the fields at Richland College.
