Jesuit outlasts Marcus to advance to regionals

Published 4/1/2009 7:01:03 AM by staff from dallas

The top ranked soccer team in the nation showed their class last night and were the better team for much of the match as Jesuit outlasted two time defending state champions FM Marcus 2-1 at Pennington Field in Bedford.

#1 ranked Jesuit came out with something to prove as tehy dominated the first half of play against Marcus.  The defending state champs were barely able to even string passes together as Jesuit was continually winning the 50/50 balls.   Jesuit took the lead in the 18th minute when Nate Dombrowski knocked home a rebound.  The second goal came off a free kick as Alexei Reyes put a great ball in that Sewell Strifler finished.  Jesuit had a comfortable 2-0 lead at the half, but Marcus would not go away easily.

The referee's quick whistle infuenced the second half as it seemed he called fouls every 30 seconds.  It would have been nice if he would have let the kids play a bit more as most of the fouls were ticky tacky.  It allowed Reyes several free kick opportunites though and Jesuit should have scored a couple of more goals and put the match out of reach, but the balls went unfinished.

With 15 minutes to play a defensive mistake allowed Marcus back into the match.  A Jesuit defender was slow to get out after a long clearance and Marcus put the ball immediately back into the Jesuit end.  The lone Jesuit defender held 3 Marcus forwards onside and the Chad Caldwell scored making it 2-1.

Marcus would be on the attack the rest of the game producing several good scoring chances, but Jesuit looked to have put the game away when they scored with 8 minutes left.  After the referee and linesman met the goal was disallowed on a handball.

In the final minute of the game Marcus looked like they would tie the match, but Jesuit defender Kyle Green blocked a point blank shot on the goal line to preserve the win.  Jesuit advances to play El Paso Bel Air Friday.
