Ursuline soccer tradition continues

WACO – Battling the blustery 40-mph northern gale, Deirdre Graham nailed a 22-foot goal with six minutes remaining to give Ursuline a 2-1 win over Fort Worth Nolan in the TAPPS Division I girls soccer championship at Betty Lou Mays Field on Saturday.
Graham, whose three older sisters played soccer for Ursuline (19-3-1), worked her way down the right side behind the Nolan (22-6-4) defenders, took a feed from Sophie Campise and fired her shot past Nolan goalie Allison McCabe for the winning score.
"It was surreal," Graham said. "I was so relieved I made it happen."
The victory brought Ursuline its 17th consecutive state title, a national record, and 21st overall.
"It's experience, confidence and tradition that carried us over today," Ursuline head coach Jamie Cantrell said. "Ursuline is very big on its traditions."
With the wind at its back, Ursuline cracked the scoreboard minutes before halftime. Kristin Shumake took a feed from Kendall Campise on the right side. Shumake's shot slithered through the Nolan defense and sneaked inside the left post with just over a minute remaining, putting Ursuline in front, 1-0.
"The wind was enough to get us out of our comfort zone," Cantrell said. "I think there were periods of time where we let it get to us."
Nolan tied the game, 1-1, midway through the second half. Mallory Baum hit a 25-footer that scooted past Ursuline goalie Madison Schottleutner into the right corner of the net.
But Baum received a red card for elbowing with just over 12 minutes left in the game, and Nolan finished the contest with only 10 players.
"We created enough chances to win the game," Nolan head coach Jay Fitzgerald said. "Playing a man down made it a lot tougher."
