Plano West, Flower Mound Marcus, Frisco advance to state

There's a reason they are called insurance goals. Logan Rhea's goal off a well-played ball by Jared Stigall late in the second half seemed like icing on the cake, but it turned out to be the difference as Plano West held off The Woodlands, 3-2, in the Class 5A, Region II championship at Eagle Field.
Plano West (19-5) advances to the state tournament for the first time in school history. The boys will join the Plano West girls, who advanced to the state tournament with a 2-1 victory against Allen earlier Saturday.
Rhea's score gave Plano West a 3-1 lead with 7:15 remaining in the second half. The goal took on new meaning when The Woodlands cut Plano West's lead to 3-2 when Matt Wagner scored off a rocket shot from 40 yards away on a free kick with 20 seconds remaining. The Woodlands made a final push, but time ran out.
Rhea knows about finishing touches. He completed a hat trick by scoring with five seconds remaining in Plano West's 5-2 victory against Plano in the regional quarterfinals Tuesday.
"The whole week wraps up what this team is about," Rhea said. "We're made of heart, and it was a great team effort. The competition was great the whole week. It was great to come out with a victory."
Plano West came out aggressive in the first half, and it helped create both of its first-half scoring chances. Both goals came off assists by senior Ryan Trammell. Trammell connected with Brett Davenport, who headed in Trammell's corner kick in traffic at the 23:18 mark. Plano West scored again six minutes later when Alex Chi deflected Trammell's free kick from about 25 yards into the net.
"I thought when we possessed the ball, we did an excellent job," Plano West coach Jimmy Dowell said. Sleet began to fall midway through halftime and lasted through the first seven minutes of the second half.
"You got to love Texas in April," Dowell said. "We had to deal with it. They had to deal with it. We got that vital third goal and now we have some more planning to do."
The Woodlands (18-6-2) came out aggressive in the second half and created plenty of chances. The Woodlands outshot Plano West, 10-3 in the second half. Plano West held a 9-7 first-half advantage. Plano West didn't get off its first shot in the second half until there were 13 minutes remaining.
"In the second half, we played more into their game," Dowell said. "We let them dictate the pace."
The Woodlands cut into Plano West's lead when Daniel Guindi headed in a free kick by Wagner from about 50 yards with 11:03 remaining in the second half.
Flower Mound Marcus 4, Hebron 1:
At Bedford, shots on goal by Flower Mound Marcus' senior forward striker Jon McMullen found the net or found a teammate whose shot found the net. McMullen scored one goal and assisted on three others as Marcus toppled Hebron in the Class 5A Region I soccer final played at Pennington Field.
With the win, unbeaten Marcus (28-0) advances to the state tournament in boys soccer for the first time in school history.
Of Marcus' four goals, three came on rebound shots including the first which McMullen scored after Hebron goalkeeper Mark Essary lost control of Andres Angulo's shot from 30 yards away. It was the lone goal of the first half.
McMullen and Angulo teamed up again on Marcus' second goal. Only this time, it was Angulo who banged in a rebound after Essary had made a splendid save on a shot by McMullen.
"If you shoot it hard enough and low enough you're going to be able to get a rebound shot most of the time," McMullen said.
Marcus, which defeated Hebron in both of their District 6-5A games, appeared in complete control, but that all changed when Hebron's Lucas Bassan scored on a free kick from 25 yards away to make it a 2-1 game with 30:26 left. Hebron (23-7) nearly tied the score with 8:57 left when Matt Driscoll lifted a shot just over the top of the goal after Marcus failed to clear Keegan Terry's corner kick.
McMullen and Marcus then put the game out of reach. Glen Marshall headed in a cross from McMullen from point-blank range with 7:36 to make it a 3-1 game. Just over a minute left, Essary made another diving save on a hard shot by McMullen but was left defenseless against the rebound shot by Sam Garza.
"We did a good job until the last 10 minutes," said Hebron coach Gino Ristevski, whose team finished fourth in District 6-5A. "We surprised a lot of teams."
Marcus coach John Gall knew his team would be up to the challenge. "It's always difficult to beat a good team three times," Gall said. "We both know each other so well. ... But there was so much on the line. We weren't going to let it slip away."
Frisco 3, Richardson Pearce 1:
At Carrollton's Standridge Stadium, Frisco scored three goals in the second half to win the Class 4A Region II final and advance to the state tournament for the first time.
Pearce (18-5-3) took a 1-0 lead into halftime on a goal by Corey Anderson. Frisco (18-4-3), however, scored at least three goals for the third consecutive game.
Frisco's Ryan Christianson tied the score, 1-1, 10 minutes into the second half, scoring on a header off a free kick by Andy Swann. Cody Adams gave Frisco a 2-1 lead with 15 minutes left with a goal off a cross from Conner Adams. Swann completed the scoring with 12 minutes remaining, scoring on a free kick.
