Coppell Girls---
Coppell girls coach Chris Stricker saw what kind of depth his team has after going 2-0-1 in last week's Fort Worth Nolan Showcase. "I can sub any position on the field and not lose anything" Stricker said.  "Thats a big deal.  We don't feel like our level drops."

Coppell defeated Nolan and Santa Margarita (Calif) and tied Irvine (Calif) Northwood.
Coppell's depth became a big factor after junior forward Logan May decided not to play this season.  May had 21 goals and 31 assists last season and was a first team selection on the Sports Day all area team.

Luckily for Stricker, he has plenty of options.  His leading scorer from last season, junior forward Emily Erickson, returns.  Sophomore Laura Sadler, who had 16 goals and 6 assists last season, moves in as the second string forward.

The team is anchored by a strong junior class that has seven starters, including defender Jazmyne Avant, a member of the U17 national team and Rachel Fuller who had 12 goals and 11 assists.

Hillcrest boys no backing down--
For Hillcrest's boys, the playoffs are now.  The reasoning behind Hillcrest's treacherous scheduling was simple.  Coach Browning Stupp wanted to prepare his team for every possible scenario so it wouldnt be surprised come playoff time.

After dropping a 3-0 decision to Klein, the nation's top ranked team, Hillcrest came away with ties against Klein Oak and Lufkin at last weekend's Klein Showcase of Soccer.  Hillcrest managed that despite not having four starters available because of injuries and grades.

"We came back with a lot of confidence" Stupp said.  "I wanted to show them the caliber of teams that we were going to play in the playoffs.  Last year we wanted to play the toughest 4A teams.  This year we wanted to play the toughest teams in the state, and we were willing to play them anywhere, anytime."
Two of the starters who missed last week's tournament are expected to return for this weekend's Northeast Tarrant County Classic.  Hillcrest is expected to open against Flower Mound Marcus one of the area's top 5A teams today.

Seniors lead way for Mesquite--
Mesquite coach Alex Figert doesnt have to look far to find senior leadership.  Twenty of his 23 players are seniors.  After missing a playoff spot by 2 points each of the last 2 seasons, Figert hopes his team's experience will make a difference this season.

Mesquite, which was 12-12-2 last season, beat Carrolton Creekview 4-1in the Creekview Go to Goal Tourney.  It was the only game Mesquite played after its remaning games were cancelled due to bad weather.

Mesquite's top seniors include Alan Jimenez, District 12-5As goalkeeper of the year last season, midfielder Juan Candel, a third year starter, sweeper Randy Young, a first year varsity player, and forward Emad Haifa, who had a hat trick against Creekview.

#1 national ranking doesnt concern Plano West girls
One conversation and the subject has been put to rest as far as Plano West girls coach Jennnifer Grubb is concerned.  When Plano West vaulted to the top of studentsportssoccer.com winter soccer nationalrankings in mid-December, Grubb gathered her team to talk about it.  The season was still three weeks away.  Being #1 in mid-December doesnt mean a thing.

"It doesnt concern us at this point" Grubb said.  "We just wanted to go into the season playing good soccer."

Plano West did that by opening with three wins at last week's Fort Worth Nolan Showcase.  Plano West outscored its opponents (Austin St Stephens, Murrieta Valley (Calif) and Tyler Lee) 11-1 and won its bracket by nine points.  A highly anticipated showdown against #18 Santa Margarita (Calif) never materialized Saturday because of bad weather.

Plano West plays #19 Ursuline on Tuesday and then faces #3 Flower Mound Marcus next Thursday in the opening round of the Colleyville Heritage Tournament.
