Frisco 2 North Dallas 1
Andy Swann and Brent Moen each scored in the final five minutes of the game as Frisco came back to beat North Dallas, 2-1, in a 4A Region II bi-district game at Pizza Hut Park on Friday night. With Frisco (14-4-3) trailing, 1-0, Swann scored the tying goal with five minutes remaining. Less than two minutes later, Moen headed in his second goal of the season on a cross from Brad Hunt. Swann's goal was his eighth. North Dallas scored in the first minute of the game.
"We didn't panic," Frisco coach Daniel Dollinger said. "We just tried to keep moving the ball. We kept throwing the ball in the box, and finally on Andy's shot, we got a nice rebound after it bounced off the keeper and defender."
Frisco will play McKinney at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Frisco's Memorial Stadium.
Boswell 1, FW Polytech 0
A dive here, a leap there. That was the difference Friday night. The Fort Worth Polytechnic Parrots kept Kevin Frey, Saginaw Boswell's 6-foot-4 goalkeeper, busy throughout the second half. And each time, Frey was ready to answer the challenge.
In a Class 4A bi-district game at Kennedale, Frey came up with the saves to help the Pioneers advance with a 1-0 victory. The win, which was the Pioneers' first postseason victory in school history, sends Boswell to the area round to meet Abilene Wylie on Tuesday night in Cisco.
Frey, who had a relatively uneventful first half, was challenged for much of the second half, as the Parrots played with the wind at their backs and attempted to attack at every opportunity.
With the Parrots trying to steal a win, Frey had five saves in the second half and recorded his 11th shutout of the season. "They kept coming down the side and kept pressuring us down the middle," Frey said. "They kept taking shots. I got a little nervous."
But Boswell coach James McCarry stayed calm. McCarry said he was confident Frey and his defenders would hold onto the lead the Pioneers had taken in the first half. James Sio put the Pioneers ahead 1-0 with less than 2 minutes remaining in the first half, after the ball deflected off a Polytechnic player and Sio rebounded to kick the ball into the net.
"Consistency in the game was our key," McCarry said. "We didn't get caught up in the moment. These boys aren't used to playing in the playoffs. And the big key was just slowing it down and trying to play mature, consistent soccer."
After falling behind 1-0, Polytechnic coach Majin Sierra implored his players to be aggressive in the second half. And they were. But the Parrots struggled at times to find the right lanes to score goals. And when they had good angles, Frey was usually there.
"We just didn't take advantage of our opportunities," Sierra said. "We had several times when we had good looks at the goal and just wasn't able to put it in."
Keller Fossil Ridge 4, FW Southwest 0
At Pennington Field, Charlie Soto, Eric Gordon, Brady Howard and Michael Weatherman scored for Fossil Ridge in a Class 4A bi-district game. Fossil Ridge (16-4-4) will play Aledo at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Saginaw High School.
Ennis 5, Pinkston 0
At Lancaster, Jovani Rangel scored three goals to lead Ennis (16-7) past Pinkston in a 4A bi-district game. Rangel, a four-year starter, has a team-high 23 goals.
"Jovani is a great finisher and a great hustler who has a nose for the goal," Ennis coach Alex Rendon said. "Lancaster has a maxed-out field, length-wise. That's why we like playing there. We use the field to our advantage, and we just finished whenever we had the opportunity." Ennis will play Waco Midway at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday at Corsicana.
Girls
Terrell 9, Madison 1
At Forney, Terrell (17-5) scored four goals in the last 10 minutes of the first half to break open a 5-1 lead in a Region II bi-district game. Ashley Yates and Emily Davis each scored two goals for Terrell. Terrell, which outshot Madison, 35-1, plays Waco Midway at 6 p.m. Tuesday at a site to be determined.
Keller Fossil Ridge 2, FW Carter-Riverside 0
At Fort Worth, Carter-Riverside had a decided home advantage, but Fossil Ridge (14-5-6) – behind unassisted goals by Heather Giesel and Lauren Morgan – had enough to move on. Fossil Ridge will play Aledo at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Saginaw High School.
Friday's game was played at Carter-Riverside, and Fossil Ridge coach Kenny Blevins estimated his team's fans were outmanned 20-1. "[Riverside's fans] were screaming and yelling and giving their kids so much energy," Blevins said. "It was the most interesting soccer game I've coached in that respect."
Britney Pearson played goalie for Fossil Ridge in the first half, and Meredith West came on in the second to finish off the shutout.
