High School Playoff Roundup 04/02/07

Published 4/2/2007 5:22:09 AM by Various from Local DFW News
A meeting of heavyweights came down to Hayden Sordini's foot and judgment, and both won out.  The Fort Worth Arlington Heights senior buried a penalty kick top left with 6:28 left in overtime for a 3-2 victory against Saginaw Boswell in the Class 4A Region I quarterfinals at North Crowley, ending the season of one of the Tarrant County area's top scorers.

"The thing I always do in a penalty kick is pick a spot and go with it, no matter what the goalkeeper does," Sordini said. "I picked a spot and ripped it."

Heights (20-2-1) will meet Wichita Falls Rider on Tuesday in a fourth-round game at a site to be determined, matching the furthest advancement ever for Heights.

Boswell (17-4-4) ended the best season in school history, having never won a playoff game before this season. Senior Greg Lopez scored twice and finished with 30 goals.

Josh Tatum and Mackenzie Ward also scored for Heights, which led 1-0 at halftime before a frenzied second half and overtime that saw a combined 18 shots on goal, including a near-miss by each in the final minute of regulation.

Fort Worth North Side 1, Keller Fossil Ridge 0 (SO): After a scoreless regulation and overtime, the Steers (16-1-4) were down 2-0 after the first two rounds of the shootout in the Class 4A Region I quarterfinals at Northwest ISD Stadium. But North Side scored on its last three attempts, and goalie Fabian Lara kept the Panthers (17-5-4) from scoring again.

The Steers advance to play El Paso Bowie in the semifinals this week.

Flower Mound Marcus 2, Arlington 1: As sad as the Colts felt after giving up a lead against Marcus, coach Jeff Waldrop said he stressed to his players to be proud of how tough they played the nation's top-ranked team in the Class 5A Region I area round.

Down 1-0 at halftime, the Marauders (24-0-0), No. 1 in the Student Sports Fab 50 rankings, needed 27 seconds to tie the game. Sam Garza scored from the top of the penalty box on a crossing pass by Eric Frazier.

Frazier gave Marcus the lead with 5:52 left, when he scored on a rebound of Jon McMullen's shot.

Arlington (12-10-1), which lost to Marcus earlier in the season 7-0, scored 7 minutes into the game on a penalty kick by Ryan Gansert.

Lewisville Hebron 2, Martin 1 (SO): Martin (12-5-6) fell in a shootout after a 1-1 draw in regulation of the Class 5A area-round match, which was resumed after lightning forced a postponement on Friday. The Hawks (21-6) converted two attempts while Martin was blanked during the shootout.

Martin had a 1-0 lead after scoring in the first half on Friday before the game was halted with 38:24 left to play. Hebron tied it with 18:19 remaining off a brilliant individual effort from Lucas Bassan.

Kelsey Allison scored the game-winning goal on a 15-foot shot with 12:33 left as Southlake Carroll earned a 3-2 victory over Duncanville (20-2-1) in a Class 5A Region I area-round match Saturday at Pennington Field.

The Lady Dragons (18-2-4) advanced to play Lewisville Hebron in a region quarterfinal Tuesday at a time and place to be determined.

The Lady Dragons trailed 1-0 at halftime but scored two unanswered goals less than four minutes apart in the second half.

North Richland Hills Birdville 3, Keller Fossil Ridge 0: Birdville kept Fossil Ridge (15-6-6) on the defensive end for most of the game, ending the Lady Panthers' season with a shutout in the Class 4A regional quarterfinals at Northwest ISD Stadium.

After a scoreless first half, Shelby Hartweck scored about two minutes into the second half for Birdville (20-2-4). Five minutes later, Sarah Wilkinson added a goal for a 2-0 lead.

Birdville plays Wichita Falls in the region semifinals next week.

Flower Mound Marcus 3, Euless Trinity 0: The Lady Marauders continued their offensive attack, adding another goal after Friday's 2-0 lead in a Class 5A Region I area-round match that was suspended by lightning. Joy Jerrell's goal with 21 minutes left finished off the victory for Marcus (22-1-3), which will face Arlington Martin in the region quarterfinals.

It was a bittersweet ending for Trinity (11-7-3), which accomplished a team goal in reaching the area round.

-- Angel Verdejo

Lewisville Hebron 5, Arlington Lamar 2: Hebron (21-2-1) scored four unanswered goals to defeat Arlington Lamar (13-9-1) at Pennington Field. The Class 5A Region I area-round match was resumed in the second half with the score tied 1-1 after lightning suspended play Friday.

-- Kelly Morris

Arlington Martin 2, Grapevine 1 (SO): Martin goalkeeper Blair Williams was perfect during the shootout as the Lady Warriors knocked off Grapevine. After a 1-1 draw in regulation, Williams saved four shootout attempts and forced another attack wide.

Natasha Anasi scored the only goal in the shootout for Martin, which will face Marcus in the region quarterfinals.

-- Tobias Xavier Lopez

Abilene Wylie 3, Fort Worth Arlington Heights 0: Freshman Kenzie Cunningham scored from 30 yards in the 55th minute to break a scoreless tie, and Abilene Wylie (18-2-1) added two more late to defeat Arlington Heights (15-5-1) in a Class 4A Region I quarterfinal at North Crowley.

Cunningham's goal came less than a minute after Heights defender Jamie Jennings left after being shaken up. The kick came from her area of the field. "They knew where to go with it, once we had a chink in the armor," Heights coach Bryan Todd said.
