Andre Akpan of Dallas nets hat trick for US U20s

Dallas native Andre Akpan nets a hat trick against Haiti to open the US Under 20 national team qualifying for the U20 World Cup.  Andre played his club ball in Dallas before heading to Harvard University where he made several freshman all america teams last season.  He played his early club years with DFW Tejanos before finishing with the Dallas Texans 88 squad that won consecutive USYSA National Championships.  Here is the story about the US-Haiti U20 qualifier from ussoccer.com.

Panama City, Panama (Jan. 17, 2007) - Andre Akpan scored a hat trick as the Under-20 Men's National Team defeated Haiti 4-1 to earn three points in their opening match of the 2007 CONCACAF Under-20 Qualifying Tournament.

The U.S. opened the scoring in the 26th minute when Andre Akpan redirected a long, looping cross from Anthony Wallace around Haiti goalkeeper Peterson Occenat and into the net. The scored doubled before halftime, as Akpan's point blank shot on a corner kick went off the post and trickled across the goal line as Occenat scrambled to try to stop it.

Four minutes after the half, Wallace and Akpan were involved again in a U.S. goal as left forward Robbie Rogers sent a cross that Akpan dummied and Wallace drove home. Rogers set up Akpan on the final goal with a back-post cross that Akpan finished inside the opposite post.

Haiti's lone goal came in the 74th minute when Etienne Yveson score a penalty that was awarded when Quavas Kirk pulled the shirt of the mark as he tried to get between the attacker and the goal.

The USA faces Guatemala (featuring American University freshman Dor Yasur) on Friday (TV: GolTV, live, 6:30 ET) and Panama (coached by former star Julio Cesar Dely Valdes) on Sunday (TV: GolTV, delay, 7 pm ET).
